Hair fall problems, how do hair transplants work

The number of people complaining of hair loss due to environment factors is increasing.

Hair transplantation is a surgical technique where healthy hair in the occipital region and temporal region is harvested and implanted on balding sites. The type of hair transplant methods depends on how hair follicles are extracted from the back of the head : FUT and FUE.

The initial conventional hair transplantation removes the scalp with a large punch and transplants multiple grafts at one time. The grafts are dissected by removing a strip of skin from the back of the scalp and the transplanted to balding area. It doesn't take longer but limits the total amount of hair available to extract around 3,000~5,000 hair strands. Moreover, it's hard to select healthy grafts and the result is unnatural, resulting in patient's satisfaction decrease. In the meantime, Follicular Unit Transplantation(FUT) was developed but it leaves a linear scar.

In 2000, Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) which extracts individual follicular units with a tiny punch was introduced. The procedure is difficult, takes long time and tends to be more expensive than the FUT procedure. However, it has minimal pain and virtually invisible scars on the back of the head. Plus, it has successful outcomes in terms of hair density because individual thick and strong follicular units are extracted directly. The average number of harvested hair strands is more than 7,000.
