Get to know the different treatment options for hair loss
by Dr. Hyun-wook Baik,
Director of Noble-line Hair Transplant Centre
There are various ways to treat hair loss beside hair transplant surgery, but patients needs to be careful to choose I will give you explantation about how to make a more simple judgement.
When patients select hair loss treatment, they have their own standard. For examples, they try on the same kind of treatments their friends have had the benefit of hair becoming thicker after using it. It seems that to see is to believe.
Some people could also be positive on trying certain treatment methods just because famous, rich, smart celebrities have used them or doctors on popular TV shows recommended certain products. Also, others tend to follow well-known people who have been in the renowned newspaper because they are trustworthy enough.
I have my own criteria for judgment as well and I should make the right choice.
If I implement treatment based on unfounded and nonsensical standard, there is high possibility for my patients to receive fairly wrong treatments.
Thus, I have thought of the valid foundations for setting up my own standard. The answer is not far away and this book is the answer. This is the most prestigious dermatology textbook called Fitzaptricks. Many physicians, dermatology residents and medical students study with this book. It's not a bad idea to make this book as basis for treatment, so called textbook-like treatment.
In order to modify even one single line of treatments written in this textbooks, agreements of fairly many doctors are needed. Even if I discovered a certain way of treatment, it wouldn't be easy to alter even a single line in textbooks unless there is effect proven by other doctors. This is what textbook-like treatment means.

In this book, there is a section of hair loss. I've read this page a lot so it got torn while showing it to my patients.
Let me show this picture. This is an algorithm presenting the treatment of male pattern hair baldness. Take a look at this clean image. As you can see, this is about Hair Transplantation. There is the word 'Scalp reduction' which refers to cutting a scalp, meaning a type of surgery in the principle that the area of hair loss is reduced when its part is sewed after cut and taken off. This is rarely performed recently. There are non-surgical treatments below aside from the surgical procedure, but it is only few.
First, Finasteride is commonly called medicines such as Propecia which reduces the level of DHT to block the progress of male pattern hair loss and make the hair thicker. This is very commonly used medicine which needs prescription and is proven to be safe as it has been released around over 20 years. Below it, the second one is topical Minoxidil, very affordable medicine. When you get one of them worth about 4 to 5 dollars, you can use them for 2 to 3 months and purchase without prescription. The third is Low Fluence Laser Light. It is a firstly published treatment in this revised edition. It is called Low Power Laser. There are many articles that the laser is effective for hair loss when the beam is shot on a scalp. Many doctors agree on it as well, therefore it was published in textbooks and my opinion is to believe what it says in textbooks as when you start to suspect something, it never ends.
Thus, I believe it's a good idea to put the standard based on textbooks. It says hair piece in the last line, which is for sever cases. As you can see, there are not many non-surgical methods available beside surgery. There are only three of them; medicine like Propecia, topical Minoxidil, low fluence laser light. What I always say, doesn't come out from my brain but the textbook as my standard of judgment, and I trust what is written in the textbook. That;'s why I thought that it was the most rational way to judge founded on it. Therefore, I will stick to my thoughts and continue the treatment. While doing so, I don't believe that there are no grounds at all for PRP, injections, scalp treatment, houttuynia cordata and oriental medicine, however I don't think they don't have proven records as enough as to the contents of textbooks. When you make a choice of hair loss treatment, do not depend on tonic and hair loss shampoo but try on basic treatment such as oral Propecia, topical Minoxidil or low fluence laser light. If you can afford to get other kinds of treatment and scalp treatment as well, make sure that those three mentioned earlier should be the top three considerations.
