Hair transplant typically solves the problem of people suffering from baldness which is not as wide as it can cover with 2000 to 3000 hair. However, in some cases, 7000 to 8000 hair or as many as 10000 hair need to be transplanted, which is called large scale hair transplant.

There are some patients or even surgeons who consider mass hair transplant as 'Lots of hair follicles are just be transplanted.' However, there are many things that patients should consider thoroughly with surgeons before undergoing the actual operation, compared to general hair transplant.

Even making a decision to go through hair transplant is fairly difficult. Balding patients who need a large scale hair restoration typically have a large balding area, however, it is not easy to implant hair follicles on the entire scalp since the number of grafts are restrained. Especially, patients under 40s using a wig expect the surgery result as same as the high-density wig, but unlike their hopes, there is a good chance that they need to still wear the wig even after undergoing hair restoration. Therefore, it is important to find similar before after cases with you and have a good consultation with a surgeon.

Adding to that, a consultation for hairline design, especially the height of forehead, is significantly important. If the hairline height is too low, the crown of the head might look empty even after surgery, while if the line is too high, the result might seem ineffective. Therefore, a surgeon should make a right decision where hair grafts need to be transplanted more based on hair style patients want and what looks suitable. In the meantime, if patients have enough beard grafts to be transplanted into the scalp, the hairline could be designed low. Those who don't take medication for hair loss can try drugs first to see if it works and then transplant new grafts densely on the hairline.

After design, it is crucial that how extracted grafts would be distributed on the balding area. If the graft is implanted on the balding area in same ratio, the result may be indifferent, thus it needs to be transplanted at a single point. For example, those patients who want to pull their hair back need to distribute equally the harvested hair follicles on the hairline, while those who want to part the hair need to transplant grafts into the part and the crown of the head more.

One thing more to remember is an operation time. Mass hair transplant would take more longer than general surgery. Then, the time increases while extracted from the back of the scalp have to stay out of the body, which results in less engraftment rate. Therefore, mass hair transplant should be operated promptly. Next, there is a drug used in anesthesia which numbs the front and back of the head during operation. It will last about 1 hour and a half or 2 hours, so it might be dangerous and less effective if a patient undergoes a hair restoration in the hospital where can't maintain steady speed.

Lastly, since mass hair transplant requires large amount of grafts, it takes a long time to go back to daily routine accordingly. A hair restoration generally can allow patients to cover the surgical area with their hair, but mass hair transplant demands fully shaved hair so it is hard to hide that area. Accordingly, it needs to find ways to shorten healing process and hide transplant through patient's own hair, wigs, etc...

To put it simply, hair transplant with a greater amount of hair mass is recommended by considering the degree of hair loss, drug reaction, the amount of beard grafts, desired hair style, etc... Also prompt operation time and healing process to go back to work need to be checked.
